My Approach to Family Therapy

Families are made up of unique individuals, each with their own experiences, perspectives, and ways of communicating. When one family member is struggling, it often affects the entire family system. Rather than focusing on blame, family therapy helps us understand the patterns that may be keeping your family feeling stuck.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I view challenges through a relational lens. Together, we'll explore how family interactions, communication patterns, roles, and life experiences influence the difficulties you're facing today. My goal is to help every family member feel heard, understood, and respected while working toward healthier ways of connecting.

Family therapy is a collaborative process. We'll build on your family's strengths, improve communication, strengthen problem-solving skills, and develop practical strategies that support lasting change. Whether your family is navigating conflict, parenting challenges, behavioral concerns, or a major life transition, therapy provides a safe, supportive space to grow together.

Moving Forward Together

Meaningful change takes time, but families can learn healthier ways to communicate, navigate challenges, and support one another. Over time, many families experience stronger relationships, increased trust, improved understanding, and greater confidence in handling life's ups and downs together.

You May Be Feeling...

If you're considering family therapy, you may be feeling...

"We love each other, but it feels like we're constantly arguing."

Or maybe...

"No matter what we try, we keep having the same conflicts over and over."

Perhaps you've found yourself thinking...

"Our family has been through so much, and we're struggling to find our way forward."

You may be navigating parenting disagreements, behavioral or emotional challenges with a child or teen, blended family adjustments, grief, divorce, or a major life transition.

It may feel like everyone is frustrated, misunderstood, or walking on eggshells.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Every family experiences difficult seasons, and seeking support is a sign of strength—not failure. Family therapy provides a safe, supportive space where each person's voice is heard, communication improves, and healthier patterns can begin to take shape.

Together, we'll work toward helping your family reconnect, strengthen relationships, and move forward with greater understanding, confidence, and hope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. Family therapy is flexible and tailored to your family's needs. Sometimes sessions include the entire family, while other times it may be most helpful to meet with parents, siblings, or individual family members. We'll work together to determine the approach that best supports your family's goals.

It's common for children or teens to feel unsure about therapy at first. Rather than forcing participation, I focus on creating a welcoming, supportive environment where each family member feels heard and respected. As trust develops, many children and teens become more comfortable engaging in the process.

Yes. Family therapy can provide support during periods of transition by improving communication, strengthening relationships, and helping family members adjust to new roles and routines. Therapy offers a safe space to navigate these changes together.

Every child is different, so sessions are tailored to their developmental level and individual needs. Younger children may express themselves through play, drawing, or interactive activities, while older children and teens often benefit from open discussion, problem-solving, and skill-building. Parents are included as appropriate to support progress outside of sessions.

The length of therapy depends on your family's goals and the challenges you're facing. Some families benefit from short-term support focused on a specific concern, while others choose longer-term therapy to strengthen relationships and navigate ongoing challenges. We'll regularly review your family's progress and adjust our approach as needed.

Yes. I offer secure telehealth family therapy throughout Pennsylvania, as well as in-person sessions in Phoenixville, PA. We'll determine together which option best fits your family's needs.

Laird Family Counseling is a private-pay practice and is considered out-of-network with insurance companies. Upon request, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement, depending on your out-of-network benefits.
